How Does PRP Work?

PRP injections are non-surgical treatment options that have the potential to speed up the healing process of an injury site, but the effectiveness of PRP therapy can vary. There are various reasons that can affect the effectiveness, as the type of injury, area of the body treated and the overall health of a patient.

Platelet rich plasma contains high concentrations of many growth factors, including TGF-beta, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF). This means the PRP has the power to encourage tissue repair in the musculoskeletal system. For those with knee injuries, hip injuries, etc., PRP injections are endorsed for their minimally invasive nature and cost effectiveness.

PRP is collected by a doctor first by drawing the patient’s blood, then placing this blood in a centrifuge which spins and separates the platelets from the rest of the blood components. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the affected area. These areas can be any of the following:

  • Acute Ligament and Muscle Injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Tendon Injuries
  • Fractures
  • Knee Arthritis
